and 61 in annapolis. as we head into the afternoon, expect sunshine and patchy clouds and we're getting to 77. a very fall feeling day. we have the changes coming in the forecast. okay, thank you, bern. >> and first, here's what people are talking about. frantic 911 calls from johns hopkins as staff heard gun fire inside the hospital. thursday, a man shot a doctor, his mother and himself. mike hellgren has more. >> reporter: the 911 tames reveal more of the chaos, the commissioner doesn't believe that the shooting was planned. panic from patients. >> 911, we need 911! there's a shooting on nelson 8. >> reporter: and the staff at the hospital -- pardus was

distraught over his mom's prognosis. >> the physician went down, it was a loud shot and everyone looked at him and people said, run! >> reporter: investigators believe that pardus shot and killed his mother then and himself. >> i guess he thought that she was serving a lie and she wasn't going to be able to walk again and to be herself again. >> reporter: he had a permit to carry a gun in virginia, but no criminal record. >> we don't know if it was in his routine. >> reporter: the police commissioner praised overall response. >> i would give us high marks for how it all perseided. there were missteps and no one

threatening injuries and several were treated on the scene. one tried to flee the accident and he's facing charges. and now on to another story we brought you last night. several people stabbed on board an mta bus. suzanne collins has more. >> reporter: witnesses say this was all a fight over a seat. and the fight went from the middle of the bug to the front and then out on the sidewalk endangering innocent people. at one of the busiest times when the students are riding from school, a brawl breaks out. it's on board the 51 bus. >> then the knives came out, people stabbing each other back and forth and you see people running and kids like crying. >> reporter: it fan as an -- it began as an argument between two men who didn't know each

other. >> there was an altercation involving three men. as a result, all three wound up with stab wounds. >> reporter: one man was waiting to board the bus. his only thought was about getting to his daughter. they started jumping the guy. >> reporter: you saw it happen? >> yes. >> reporter: what were you thinking? >> get out the way. >> >> reporter: three years ago, there were several attacks. these photos were released by mta after a stabbing on board the bus. this is the first report of incidents on board the bus. >> i was scared. i was real, real scared. i thought we was gonna get hurt, we was right there. >> reporter: the 46-year-old mains is going to be charged with assault. >> none of the injuries are

life threatening. >> >> now, on to washington, d.c. where there was a police involved shooting blocks from the capitol building. the suspect is now hospitalized. the man pointed a gun at them 5:00 friday morning and refused to drop it. the officers opened fire and hit the suspect once. his name and condition isn't released there. >> >> and the results are in and baltimore will have a new city state's attorney. jessamy broke the news at a press conference yesterday. >> i called bernstein and i adviced him i was conceding and i pledged my support for a smooth transition. >> and bernstein became the democratic nominee. it was a close election with bernstein edging out jessamy with a thousand votes. he says it's a call for reform. >> the results show we

attracted a broad base of support across the city, people of all races, ages and economic roots were ready for a change. >> reporter: pat warren will have more at 6:30. stay with wjz-13 for complete coverage of campaign 2010. for the latest, go to wjz.com. well, good-bye dial up. maryland is getting millions to improve broad band internet service. it will allow the state to expand the high speed internet service. it's also expected to create more than 1200 new jobs. officials unveil a bold new plan to improve the howard street train tunnel. this is after an explosion nine years ago sparked years of blame between the city.

all of the improvements won't come cheap. >> july, 2001, a car derails and it massed an explosion. it happened near the heart of baltimore near the howard street tunnel. there's been an overall called of the tunnel and today, they agreed on the plan. >> they'll do the rail improvements and replacement of track and maintenance of the track bed and improvements within the tunnel. >> csx also said yes to frequent inspections of the tunnel and installing more up to date communication systems on the train and one improvement that the city pushed hard for. >> we wanted live information exchange of what the car go is going through baltimore so we would be able to get it. >> reporter: he runs the

mayor's office of emergency management. he says that csx is adding more ventilation in the tunnel and giving the firefighters access to the equipment. >> the key is, if there's a derailment, we want to respond to it. >> 25 years ago, this was the end of the tunnel. >> reporter: the tunnel is more than 100 years old and it's owned by the rail company. this could stop the years of finger pointing between the city and cfx dead in its tracks. >> i'm excited about the enhanced relationship we've had with cfx. it's grown. they'll replace the rail and the tunnel this year. the city will pay for some of the refairs and cfx will foot the bill for others. they'll use homeland security grounds to pay for the improvements there. >> >> if you think that the

just the patchy clouds, that's it. there's a chance for a shower and it's a really small chance. the other thing that the front is doing, that's good news. it's keeping igor from the united states. we want to keep you updated on the thunderstorms. it's karl. it's inland, it's lost a lot of strength. a lot of problems in mexico with this. the other one is igor. it's a category 2. you can see the winds, 109 miles per hour moving to the northwest. it's making more of the turn. it could strengthen before heading to bermuda and bermuda is here and the forecast path takes it close to or on top of bermuda. here's the track and it takes it to the north. eventually, it will move to the north east. it's taking that hard turn

because of the front through our area. it keeps it away from the united states. winds, 58 miles per hour and moving to the northwest and picking up speed and it will be racing away. here's igor. an okay, the forecast for us, today, we'll get up to 77- degree and it's quieter around here. sunny and partly cloudy skies and tonight, going down to 54 degrees. tomorrow, we'll go up and 84 for the high. that's a slight chance for a shower and monday, that's out of here and we're in the 70s for the high. take a look at next week. 80 degrees tuesday and wednesday and thursday, we're back in the upper 80s. we have warmer air coming our way. if you haven't closed the pools yet and you can, hold off, it will be warm again. >> it's been nice weather in the afternoon. it's just the morning when i'm out reporting that it's chilly. >> that's just the beginning.

we're looking at a high of 77 degrees. we'll have some clouds with it and if any shower, it will be brief. it gets up to 84 and we'll get to 77 by monday and tuesday, we'll start another warmup. take a look at wednesday and thursday, we're back up to 88 degrees in the middle part of the week. not quite done with the heat yet. sounds good. nearly 200 years ago, the corner stone was layed for the washington monument and now, some much needed repairs are stirring a controversy.

>> reporter: for the past 200 years, the area around the base of the monument changed a half a dozen times. the latest involves brick sidewalks and fixing the monument and the redo of the streets and sidewalks. >> this is baltimore's most important symbol. it deserves this attention. >> reporter: heres where the winds have changed and some blow cold. the current crop of trees were planted hodgepodge and used in the monument -- views of the monument are hidden and to make it more formal, trees over a hundred have to go. >> it's shocking to hear about the trees going down and many are on the verge of death. >> reporter: she's the campaign director for the project. the conservancy is donating the design and the construction to the city. >> we're taking down the trees

about 77 degrees and sunshine and patchy clouds. it will be a beautiful start to the weekend. the cold front comes through tomorrow, not much to it, but it will change the weather a bit. here's what people are talking about this morning. it's been three days since the shooting in johns hopkins and today, the police continue to search for answers. pardus shot his elderly mother's doctor in the stomach because he was upset about the prognosis, then, he went into his mother's rom and shot her and himself. hopkins didn't close and many say they felt safe. >> the feed back from my families and friends is what made it reel. it was intense. >> reporter: the police commissioner doesn't believe that the shooting was planned.

let us join together to fight for the future of the city. >> reporter: no argument there. >> the tough part, making baltimore safe starts now. >> as the nominee for city state's attorney has a general election, there's no opposition. reporting from east baltimore, i'm pat warren. a state senator accused of using his position to benefit a local business pleads not guilty. he's charged with using his influence to benefit the grocery store chain shoppers. he faces several charges. he stepped down from the chairman of the senate budget, but he's running unopposed in

november's general election. new details about a woman held captive in a reisterstown apartment nor nearly a year. she brought the 22-year-old woman to gbmc after she slipped into a coma. she woke up and says she was held prisoner in a bathroom and severely tortured by the couple who lived in the apartment. the police say that the couple did have a motive. >> it appears that the motive was purely financial. >> they say they were stealing her social security benefits and she includes missing an upper lip and lacerations. >> it's been three weeks since the gunman stormed the discovery channel head quarters. two of the three hostages are telling their story.

>> reporter: september 1st, 43- year-old james lee walks into the lobby of the discovery channel building. this man walked in at the same time. >> are we doing a production, why does someone have a gun in the lobby, i didn't see cameras and then, he turned the weapon towards me. i was like, oh! >> reporter: christopher wood is also there and the security guard and what followed is four hours of sheer terror. >> i got upset and started thinking, this is it, this is how i'm going to die. >> at first. [ indiscernible ] just not knowing what's going to happen in the next couple of seconds, let alone knowing it was going to be a prolonged hostage situation. >> reporter: lee protested there for years and his rants made no sense. the fact that he had children

enraged him. >> who told you to have kids. why two, one wasn't good enough. >> and finally, after hours of negotiation, the security guard and the hostages made hand signals to make a run for it. >> they ran and the s.w.a.t. team opened fire and lee was killed. it was the hardest moment in my life. it was that moment that everyone talks about. looking death straight in the face. >> that was denise coke reporting. the security guard is choosing to remain anonymous. they also found and detonated other devices at this man's home. moving on now. teen pregnancies are down nationally and here in baltimore, as kai jackson reported. there's a plan to reduce them more.

>> reporter: the birth of a child is among the most wonderful experiences in life. when teens are the parents, a happy event can be overwhelming. >> you need to be mindful and learn the proper ways to put your child to sleep. >> reporter: there's a new initiative in front of a crowd. she wants to reduce the teen pregnancy and infant mortality in the city. >> children of teen mothers have high rates of medical and educational problems. today, we'll talk about what can be done to reduce teen births. >> reporter: the data from 2008 shows that the teen birthrate was 64 births to every 1000 spanish and african american having the highest teen rates.

>> teen mothers are less likely to graduate. and a child born to a teen mom is 50% more likely to repeat a grade in school and is also more likely to drop out of high school. >> to lower the birthrate,the city is going to improve access to sex education and improve availability of services and involving community leaders. >> the pregnancy prevention is a health issue. the children of teen mothers are at greater risk of neglect and children of teen mothers are less likely to receive the proper nutrition and health care. >> that was kai jackson reporting. it's a planned effort with baltimore city and johns hopkins. maryland's oyster growing program is expanding. yesterday, the partnerships

brought oyster cages to the river in pasadena. one of the areas was the site of eagle coat's school. throughout the program, the students will foster the oysters to beef up the population. more than a thousand are working to grow the oysters in 19 different areas. well, it was a close scoring game but the orioles couldn't win. last night, millwood let rodriguez hit this out of the park giving the world champs a 1-0 lead. the birds stayed ahead for most of the game. another homer in the 9th was too much. orioles lose 3-4. that's a rough one, they've had great wins lately. what a turn around. >> like i said to tim, it's so close, it doesn't matter, right? >> well, at this point. >> just looking forward to next

year. there will be excitement. what they've done has been fantastic. >> good job. ♪ oriole's magic ♪ >> it's going to be a nice one. high pressure in control. there's a front to the northwest, that's going to effect us. before we get to that. taking a look at the temperatures. , 52 degrees is out there and 60s further to the south and the winds out of the north. they've calmed down since yesterday. the winds will be light today. it's going to keep the dry air in place. high pressure giving us sunshine and taking a look at the next front, it's draped out along the u.s., canadian border. it's going to move our way and lose steam. and tomorrow, as it passes by, a slight chance for a shower and it's a small chance. we'll see the clouds from it

and maybe that's it. temperatures will drop slightly. here's the front and how it looks when it comes through. and as it comes around, temperatures knocked down a little bit. also, it's keeping the hurricane away from the united states. you see the sharp right hand turn, that's because of the front. the bad news that's for bermuda. it's still underneath the track of the path. it's a category 2 and it could be a 3 before it makes its way over bermuda. we're talking about 109 miles per hour at this point. there moving to the northwest at 13 miles per hour. it will make the turn to the north and north east in the next 24 hour. we still have julia. it's weakening and it's losing the strength shortly.

here's igor. that's a large storm. as far as karl goes. made landfall around noon. it's lost the strength onland and there's a lot of rain with it. it's banking up against the mountains. it's causing mudslides and serious issues in mexico. we're fortunate for not having the problems today. we have a nice one out there. northwest winds at five to ten knots and the bay temperature at 74 degrees. 77 for the high today and sunny and partly cloudy and tonight, back down into the 50s and tomorrow, we'll be back into the 80s and we'll see clouds from it and kicking up the winds slightly and it gets out of here at 77 degrees. if you're not look at the television, wednesday and thursday, we're warming it up and back into the upper 80s for the highs. you may have thought that summer was over, but not quite yet. >> okay, monday, the low of 52

lindsey lohan failed a drug and alcohol test. she could face a probation violation and she could go back to jail. it's not known what substance triggered the results. she acknowledged the failure and said she's prepared to appear before the judge. well, not surprised, unfortunately. well, still ahead on eyewitness news saturday morning. >> i'm suzanne collins in essex. some are having to park their cars on the grass for classes and that could have something toto,,,,,,,,

cohen. pardus was distraught over his mom's prognosis. >> it was a loud noise. everyone looked and said, run for safety. it was next to me that he dropped down. >> reporter: pardus ran back into his mother's room and closed the door and shot and killed her. >> i guess he thought that he was serving a lie. that she wasn't going to be able to walk again and to be herself again. >> reporter: pardus had a permit for a weapon, but no criminal record. >> we didn't know if he always had the gun. >> reporter: the police commissioner praised the overall response. >> i would give us high marks for how the whole thing happened. there were some missteps. none of them cost anyone their,

one was hospitalized and several were treated on the scene. one of the drivers attempted to flee the accident and was arrested nearby. he's facing charges. on to another story we brought you as breaking news last night. several people stabbed on board a bus not far from the mall. suzanne collins has more on what happened. >> reporter: witnesses are saying this was a fight over a seat. that knife fight went from the middle of the bus out on to the sidewalk endangering innocent people along the way. at one of the busiest times at the mta stop when the students are riding from school, a brawl breaks out. it frightens passengers. >> then the knives came out and people stabbing each other both. you see people running and crying. >> reporter: it began as an

argument. they apparently didn't know each other. >> there was an altercation on the bus involving three men. as a result of that. all three wound up with stab wounds. one man was waiting to board the bus. his only thought was about getting home to his daughter. >> they jumped the guy and they took out a knife and stabbed him. >> you saw it? yes, us thinking, get out of the way. >> three years ago, there were violent attacks on the buses. a woman was beaten by students and these cameras shots were released. this is the first reported incidence of violence this year. >> i was scared. i was real, real scared. i thought we was going to get hurt. >> the 46-year-old was charged with assault and there could be other charges against other people. back to you on tv hill. police say that none of the

injuries are life threatening grandchild and moveing to washington, d.c. there was a police involved shooting blocked from the capitol billing. the suspect is hospitalized. the man pointed a gun at the officers and the officers opened fire and hit him at least once. the results are in and baltimore will have a new city state's attorney. jessamy broke the news to supporters at a conference yesterday. >> i called bernstein and i advised him that i was conceding and i pledged my support for a smooth transition. >> and with that, bernstein became the democratic nominee for the city state's attorney. bernstein says his victory is a call for reform. >> results show that we

and the professional riders will have a nicely warn in took and they'll use the different lines. they'll develop the different set of skills and race aggressively. it will be pretty fluid. how many are in this total. >> well, we have over 1200 people racing. people coming from all over the region? >> we have the farthest away,the czech and italy and california and chicago. and the good thing s this was for a few years and an international singleing -- sanctioning body said, they have something going on. >> it's been good and the largest attended race in the mid-atlantic for the last four years. we started strong and we make strides every year. pros have to come to collect

us down monday and we'll have a warm up towards the middle of the week. this is also keeping igor away from the united states. the winds are 109 miles per hour. there's a chance it could be a 3 again. and it will move to the north and the north east. the reason it takes a sharp turn is because of the front coming through for us proteching us. unfortunately, for bermuda, the path cons to -- continues to take it over bermuda. julia is down to a tropical storm and it will be taking a tunnel away and karl is down to a tropical depression. our waters, northwest winds at five to ten knots and we'll go up to 77 degrees tonight for the high and down to the 50s and then, tomorrow as we warm it up, we're up to 84 degrees and we'll see the clouds coming in and more clouds around monday and they'll get out of

you've had a good history with this race in the past. yes, i did mine here and won it and i'm looking forward to it again. what brings the athletes here to baltimore. it's exciting and it's spectator friendly and there's a lot going on and there's things for your children and the whole family can participate and drink beer. that, and the guy who's running this. it's his shop, it started in hamdon. he's running the race and starting a new shop and what was the other thing he was doing? >> well, this is the first year for a two day event in charm city. >> it's unbelievable you get the athletes to come here. is this course layed out differently? >> every cross course has its own recipe and variables. it's fun, it has a lot of

natural obstacles in it. there's a downed tree we have to climb over and stair runups. it makes it challenging. it's quite fun. >> this is, for people who don't know, it's a mountain bike and a road bike. >> it's a combination of the two. good mud clearance on the brakes. it's light and supple so it has a lot of speed and power. there are a lot of pictures out there or cyclists suffering and a lot of people think they're bicyclists, but it's the top city cross races. that's when it's the most fun to watch. >> i want to come over here. you came from? >> italy. you've had great history in the race? >> yeah, i think like i won the race twice.

>> and you're, like laura, a cycling professional. it stuns people to think you would come from italy to this race. >> well, yeah, i professional cyclist for a u.s. based team and i spend most of the time in the u.s.. a few years ago, i was in pennsylvania and this is close to me and it was the first race. it was interesting and now, i'm moved to ashville, north carolina and i still drive up. i really like this race. what is it you like about this? >> well, the park. and it's beautiful, you would see, when the racing starts, the people come to watch and drink beer. and very interesting for them, too. >> it's spectator friendly. you can come on the course and see people come around a few times in a row and -- you can

cheer and heckle them. it's entertainment. when we ride up and see the people involved, it's a boost. >> people don't realize what a world class event this is, but you have a guy from italy doing it. >> you look about 120 pounds soaking wet and you're all muscle and lung. that's fantastic and you race on the tour of california and you're here and your goal for today is? >> try to win the race and try to make it three wins on baltimore on charm city and we'll see what's happening. >> how much is preparation and how much happens on the course? >> well, it's the first race for me, i don't know how the leg reacts. it's intense and you find some writer [ indiscernible ] >> some some are already warmed up.

it's like about an hour. >> it's like an hour long sprint. >> yes. >> say the name of your team? race for the subaru. it starts account 9:00 and runs until 5:00. just walking out here and looking at the gear. so, mike, we think it is a beautiful day and they would prefer the rain for the mud? >> do you prefer when it's wet and muddy. yes, some riders like the slippery course. some other riders like the run with carrying the bike on their shoulders. some riders hate it. what's your preference. >> i like when it's slippery. [ laughter ] >> all right, my man.

i wouldn't use it on a sensitive or shy dog. but something bigger. >> maybe a small dog, it would empower them. well, they have different sizes. it looks like a life preserver, too. you'll have medicine to take home from your vet and you may need to use peanut butter. and for kitties, replace the litter an use newspaper cut up and they sell palates like that. that's for less abrasion and dust. and you want to keep your pets from doing too much. if you can isolate the kitties in a room. the pets need to be kept warm. this is a warming pad. a lot of times, they're chilly and you want to raise their body temperature. you can put this in their bed
